About This Product

Features

■ Suppression of Distortion and Cracking of Fabricated Objects through Electron Beam Preheating

In electron beam additive manufacturing, preheating (hot process) by the electron beam reduces rapid temperature changes in the fabricated object. Therefore, residual stress is less likely to occur in the fabricated object, suppressing distortion and cracking. On the other hand, in laser additive manufacturing, repeated heating and rapid cooling can easily accumulate residual stress, potentially causing deformation or cracking depending on the material and shape.

■ Maintaining High Purity in a High Vacuum Environment

Electron beam additive manufacturing is performed in a high vacuum environment. Therefore, oxidation and impurity inclusion of the fabricated object are suppressed. On the other hand, while laser additive manufacturing is performed in an inert gas atmosphere (atmospheric pressure), oxygen and moisture may remain, so caution is required with active metals such as titanium alloys.

■ BSE Image Monitoring Function

Leveraging our expertise as an electron microscope manufacturer, we have developed a BSE (Back-Scattered Electron) image monitoring function. This technology captures backscattered electrons (BSE) emitted from the electron beam, allowing for layer-by-layer observation of the surface shape and defects of the fabricated object. This enables visualization of fabrication quality using electron microscopy technology, which is difficult with laser additive manufacturing and other fabrication methods.

■ Defect Detection During the Fabrication Process

The BSE image monitoring function is characterized by its ability to detect defects in the fabricated object in real time. Because it eliminates the need to wait for post-fabrication inspection processes like X-ray CT, it leads to more efficient quality control. This function acquires BSE images by melting metal powder with an electron beam and then irradiating the entire molten surface with the electron beam again. Based on these cross-sectional images, the aim is to automatically detect internal defects and deformation of the fabricated parts. By observing the fabrication process in real time, it becomes possible to guarantee the quality of the fabricated object.
