What Is a Bushing?
In a larger sense, bushing is used to fill gaps between parts. Bushing is often used in machine parts and bearing parts.
Bearing parts are constantly causing friction with the rotating shaft while the machine is in operation, and even if grease or other lubricant is used to prevent wear, it cannot be completely eliminated.
Therefore, it is necessary to regenerate the shaved parts, but if the bushing is used, functionality can be restored simply by replacing the parts.
Uses of Bushings
The following are examples of uses for bushings
- Joints of automobile suspension arms
Friction occurs between the suspension arms and the car body due to vibration while the car body is in motion and with each other. For this reason, rubber bushings are used at the joints to reduce vibration. As the rubber material deteriorates over time, vibration and wobble will occur during running. - The linkage between the motor and arm
In motors used for lid opening and closing applications, oilless bushings are often placed in the mounting hole of the arm that connects the lid to the motor. This is because if the arm itself is cut off, parts replacement will be a major undertaking.
Principle of Bushings
There are two types of bushings, the oilless type, and the oiling type, with different characteristics.
- Oilless bushings
Since regular lubrication is not required, this type of bush is often used in places where it is difficult to lubricate.
However, it has the disadvantage of being prone to wear, so it must be replaced more frequently. - Oiling bushings
If refueling is done regularly, there is little wear and the frequency of replacement is reduced. However, neglecting to lubricate the bushings will shorten their service life, so management is important. If an automatic lubricator is used at the same time, the operator's man-hours for management will be eliminated.
The strength of bushings varies depending on the material used, so the appropriate selection is necessary depending on the intended use.
For general machine parts, it is easy to select a material with high strength in consideration of wear resistance, but bushings are parts that must be replaced.
If the strength of the bushings are too high, the bushings will not wear, but the main body parts will wear, increasing the cost and man-hours required to replace the parts.
Appropriate materials should be selected for bushings in consideration of the materials of the main body parts.
