A conductivity meter is a device to measure the electrical conductivity of an aqueous solution. Conductivity is a value that indicates the ease of flow of electric current in water, and the higher the concentration of ions in the water, the greater the value. A voltage is applied to two electrodes attached to the conductivity meter. The electrical conductivity is measured from the current and resistance value at that time.
Conductivity meters are available in desktop and portable versions. Portable conductivity meters are frequently used in the field because of the simplicity of measurement with a conductivity meter. Conductivity meters must be calibrated with potassium chloride standard solution before use.
Conductivity meters have a wide measurement range. Therefore, Conductivity meters are used in a wide variety of aqueous solutions, ranging from measurements of samples with very little ionic material and low conductivity, such as ion-exchanged water and pure water, for example, to measurements of samples with a high content of ionic material, such as seawater.
Conductivity meters are also used to analyze environmental water such as river water, lakes, and seawater, as well as wastewater from the processes of semiconductor, chemical, and pharmaceutical manufacturers, and to control water quality. They are also sometimes used in the food industry for simple salinity analysis.
There are two types of conductivity meters: contact and dielectric.
One is called the contact type, in which the electrode is in direct contact with the sample solution. Since particles or other substances adhering to the electrode of a contact-type conductivity meter can cause fluctuations in the measured value, it is used to measure solutions that do not contain solids or pure water with low electrical conductivity.
On the other hand, dielectric conductivity meters are used for solutions that contain many solid particles or foreign matter, or solutions that corrode the electrode. In a dielectric type, a coil is embedded in a resin, and an alternating current is applied to this coil to measure the electric conductivity from the strength of the induced electric field generated in the solution to be measured. The dielectric method can measure even corrosive liquids and solutions with high ionic concentrations because the coil is protected. However, it is not suitable for measuring minute electrical conductivity.
Conductivity meter is a device to measure electrical conductivity, which indicates the ease of current flow in a solution. The conductivity meter is immersed in a sample solution, and a voltage is applied to initiate the measurement. The amount of current produced by the application of this voltage increases with the ion concentration in the solution. Therefore, the electrical conductivity can be determined from the current value and resistance value.
Conductivity meters need to be calibrated before use. Potassium chloride standard solution is used for calibration. Once the standard solution has been used for calibration, it may be contaminated by substances adhering to the electrode surface, so the standard solution should be divided into smaller portions, and once used, the solution should not be reused.
