A sound level meter is a device to measure environmental noise and noise generated by machinery. It is also called a sound level meter.
Noise does not simply measure the loudness of a sound, but it is necessary to consider how people hear it. Therefore, the sound level, which is a value calculated by weighting the sound pressure and frequency of loud or unpleasant sounds, is used to measure the degree of noise. There are two types of sound level meters depending on the accuracy of noise measurement, ordinary sound level meters, and precision sound level meters.
Sound level meters are used to measure the noise generated by machinery at construction sites and factories. The degree of noise tolerance is defined by law, so it is necessary to meet noise standards when constructing a factory or introducing new machinery. When constructing a house, the noise level inside the house must be kept below the standard value, so a sound level meter is used to measure the noise generated by cars, airplanes, trains, etc., in the vicinity.
A sound level meter consists of a microphone, an amplifier, a frequency weighting unit, a noise level calculation unit, and a display unit. The measurement principle of a sound level meter is explained below.
The microphone picks up the surrounding sound and converts it into an electrical signal. The frequency is measured by measuring the period of vibration of the vibrating membrane, and the sound pressure is measured by measuring the magnitude of the vibration. The electrical signal generated by the microphone is then amplified by an amplifier. The sound level meter can be classified into two types according to the measurement accuracy of the microphone. These are the ordinary sound level meter and the precision sound level meter.
In the frequency weighting section, the frequencies of the electric signals amplified by the amplifying amplifier are weighted according to the frequencies that are easy for humans to hear.
The noise level is calculated using the weighted frequencies and sound pressure. The calculation is performed using an equal loudness curve.
The most important thing to keep in mind when using a sound level meter is the influence of reflected sound. Sound reflects when it hits an object, so the sound level meter should be placed as far away from the wall as possible when measuring.
The sound level meter should be fixed on a tripod or the like, and the microphone should be pointed at the target sound source. If the person who is measuring the sound level meter has no choice but to hold the meter, they should measure the sound level meter as far away from the body as possible so as not to pick up the reflected sound from the body.
