A leak detector is a device used to test for leaks in equipment and facilities that require high pressure or vacuum to be maintained. There are many methods for leak testing. The most common is the helium leak detector, which uses helium as the detector gas (trade gas).
The "spraying method," in which a built-in turbomolecular pump is used to create an ultra-high vacuum inside the object to be inspected and helium gas is sprayed from the outside, is widely used. Helium leak detectors are characterized by their extremely high sensitivity and responsiveness, and can be performed easily.
Leak detectors are used to inspect vacuum vessels, pressure vessels, and the piping, auxiliary equipment, and parts connected to these vessels. Leak detection can be performed on small areas such as welding defects, microscopic holes, and airtightness defects in seals caused by defects in the manufacturing process of these products.
Since the internal space of the product to be inspected must be kept in a high vacuum, it is necessary to prepare sealing parts and sealing joints for inspection in the case of open structures.
Distribution of helium gas, which is indispensable for helium leak detectors, has been deteriorating in recent years, making it important to secure distribution routes during operation.
The helium leak test method using a helium leak detector is specified in JIS.
The helium leak detector is connected to the object to be tested for leaks, and the inside of the object is evacuated to the ultra-high vacuum range by a turbo molecular pump mounted on the detector.
If there is a defect near the sprayed area that causes the leak, the helium that leaks into the inside of the object is exhausted by the turbo molecular pump and detected by the helium detector (mass spectrometer tube) installed in the exhaust line. The presence of a leak, or defect, is detected by a helium detector (mass spectrometer tube) installed in the exhaust line.
Recent helium detectors are highly sensitive and responsive, so it is possible to determine the location and degree of leakage, but this requires technical proficiency in handling the spray probe and adjusting the amount of spray.
In addition, although we are good at detecting localized leaks as described above, we are unable to quantify the total leakage of the entire system.
Although there are inspection methods that use nitrogen or halogen as the trade gas in addition to helium, helium is the most commonly used because it exists only in a very small amount in the atmosphere that flows in from the leakage point at the same time, has a small atomic structure, flows in through minute defects, and has a high detection sensitivity.
