An air leak tester is a device that detects air leaks from the inside of an object.
The leak test can be performed by pressurizing or depressurizing the object to be measured and detecting the atmospheric pressure using various methods, such as direct pressure type and differential pressure type.
The appropriate type of air leak tester depends on the shape of the object to be measured and whether it contains anything other than air or water. Unlike a simple leak test using soapy water, an air leak tester can accurately detect the location and amount of leaks.
Air leak testers can be used to perform leak tests under various pressure settings, allowing leak checks on high-pressure vessels and other products that must not leak when in use.
In the industrial field, air leak testers are often used to inspect automotive parts, such as washer fluid tanks and airbags, because many automotive parts have air leaks that must not be tolerated.
There are direct pressure type and differential pressure type air leak testers.
The main style of air leak tester is the direct pressure type air leak tester. It literally performs a leak test by continuously measuring the actual pressure.
First, pressurization is performed to increase the air pressure inside the object to be measured. During the pressurization process, the temperature and volume of the air are unstable and the atmospheric pressure is unstable, so we wait until equilibrium is reached at a constant pressure. Once equilibrium is confirmed, the air pressure is continuously measured. If there is a leak somewhere, this pressure will slowly drop, which can be detected to check for leaks.
There is also a differential pressure type air leak tester. In this type of measurement, a leak-free object called a master is prepared, and the master is connected to the object to be measured. The master is then pressurized and balanced as in the direct pressure type, and the pressure difference is measured by a sensor connected between the master and the object to be measured. If there is no leakage anywhere in the object to be measured, no differential pressure is generated, but if there is a leakage in the object to be measured, a differential pressure is distributed according to the amount of leakage.
