A load cell scale is a sensor that converts a force (mass, torque, etc.) into an electrical signal and outputs it. In other words, a load cell is a sensor that converts force (mass, torque, etc.) into an electrical signal and outputs it.
The most widely used type of load cell is the strain gauge type, characterized by high accuracy, low influence of temperature change, simple structure, easy manufacturing and maintenance, few moving parts and friction parts, and long life and performance maintenance.
Load cells are used everywhere force is measured. They are rarely seen directly because they are built into equipment, but they are installed in industrial scales, balances, platform scales, scales, testing machines, etc. There are different types of load cells, such as beam type, S-shaped type, column type, and diaphragm type, and they are used for other purposes. The beam type is used for most platform scales, the column type for industrial scales, and the S-shape type for measuring tensile force.
The principle of strain gauge load cells is briefly explained.
Many metals have the property of changing their electrical resistance when subjected to mechanical expansion or contraction. Strain gauges use this property of metals to detect strain from the change in electrical resistance.
A load cell consists of a strain generator (the part that generates strain) and a strain gauge attached to the strain generator. Strain gauges are connected to the strain generator and used for measurement.
There is a proportional relationship between the resistance change of the strain gauge and the strain, and the following equation holds.
ΔR/R = K × ε
R: Original resistance value
ΔR: Resistance value changed by expansion and contraction
K: Proportional constant (gauge factor)
ε: Strain
The Wheatstone bridge circuit detects the generated electrical resistance. The Wheatstone bridge circuit is an electrical circuit suitable for detecting small electrical resistance and consists of four resistors arranged in a rhombus-like shape.
