Electromagnetic Flow Meters are devices that use the physical laws of electromagnetic induction to measure the amount of fluid flow.
It is a type of flowmeter characterized by the fact that it has no moving parts and no pressure drop. However, due to its measurement principle, Electromagnetic Flow Meters are limited to conductive liquids. It cannot measure insulating liquids such as oil or gases.
With conductive liquids, measurement is possible without being affected by the temperature, pressure, density, viscosity, or conductivity of the liquid. It can also measure the flow rate of slurries and corrosive chemicals in which mud or fine particles are suspended in the liquid.
Electromagnetic Flow Meters can be applied to liquids containing solids and liquids with high viscosity. Therefore, it is one of the flow meters used in all industries.
As mentioned above, electromagnetic flowmeters are used to measure flow rates in a very wide variety of fields.
Electromagnetic Flow Meters use Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction to measure flow rates.
Electromagnetic induction is a phenomenon in which a voltage is generated in a conductor moving in a magnetic field. A magnetic field is a state in which magnetism is generated, like a magnet.
When a conductive object moves in a magnetic field, a voltage is generated in proportion to its speed. Electromagnetic Flow Meters convert this voltage into a flow rate by detecting it. Therefore, an electromagnetic flowmeter consists of a measuring tube through which the liquid to be measured passes, an exciting coil that generates a magnetic field, and a circuit that measures the voltage generated by electromagnetic induction.
When a magnetic field is generated perpendicular to the measuring tube, the conductive liquid flows through the tube crosses the magnetic field perpendicularly, generating a voltage perpendicular to both the measuring tube and the magnetic field. Liquid can be determined and the volumetric flow rate can be obtained.
Electromagnetic Flow Meters are selected based on the characteristics of the liquid to be used and the location of the installation.

Lining tubes are available in rubber and PFA lining materials.
There are two types of piping connection methods: wafer and flange. The wafer type is less expensive, but the flange type is easier to remove and install. Note that only wafer type can be selected when ceramic measuring tubes are selected.
Once the type of measuring tube and connection method have been selected, the bore size should also be selected to match the connecting piping.
Electrodes and grounding rings may come in contact with liquid, so they should be selected to match the liquid flowing in the piping. Rings such as SUS316L are used.
For alkaline liquids, hastelloy or the like is used. For strong acidic liquids such as royal water, tantalum can be used to prevent corrosion. Platinum iridium is a metal that is resistant to all kinds of acids and alkalis, but its high cost is a disadvantage.
Electromagnetic Flow Meters generally use 4-20 mA DC current analog transmission, with HART communication widely used internationally among 4-20 mA DC, and other communication methods developed by individual companies. The communication method should be selected depending on whether or not there is a communication device for maintenance.
