Fluids are broadly classified into liquids and gases. Fluid sensors are those that use physical phenomena to detect whether a fluid is flowing or exists.
For example, there are level switches that indicate whether or not a fluid exists, level gauges that indicate the height of the fluid's liquid surface, and flow meters that measure the flow rate of the fluid. Level gauges and level switches may also be used for powder and granular materials.
Level meters and flow meters are characterized by their many measurement methods. They are used in such a wide variety of environments that there are conditions appropriate for each measurement method.
Fluid sensors are mainly used in chemical and petroleum plants where fluids are transferred in pipes or stored in tanks.
Flow meters are used to record the amount of fluid when it is being prepared into tanks, or to set the amount of fluid to be prepared and perform control operations based on the flow meter value.
Level gauges are mainly used to continuously measure the amount of fluid remaining in a tank. Level switches, on the other hand, are used to accurately detect the presence of fluid. This is also often used as a sensor for automation.
The volumetric type is a typical example of a flow meter. The flow rate is calculated by the number of rotations of the rotor inside the container as the fluid flows through it. By multiplying the volume of the container by the number of revolutions, the flow rate of the fluid delivered can be calculated.
There are many typical level meters and level switches. The capacitance type compares the dielectric constants of the fluid and air and detects and measures the difference. It is simple and can be used in a wide range of applications, but cannot be used when the dielectric constant of the fluid changes.
The float type has a float. It uses the principle of buoyancy, a principle that is easy to see and understand. The float is equipped with a magnet, and when the liquid level rises, the magnet switch is activated to detect and measure. While the cost is low, it cannot be used with liquids of light specific gravity or in the presence of dust or floating matter.
The pressure type uses pressure to detect. The weight of the fluid in the tank is detected as pressure. There are two types of pressure sensors: the pressure type that measures the pressure itself (absolute pressure) and the differential pressure type that measures the difference from atmospheric pressure or a certain pressure (differential pressure). Although this type is readily available, it cannot respond to changes in the specific gravity of the fluid.
