What Is a Coating?

Coatings

A coating agent is mainly used in the medical field to protect the skin, and in the industrial field to protect the surface of metal materials.

In general, coatings form a film on the surface of an object to reduce the influence of the outside interruptions.

Focusing on the formation of coating, for example, one of the effects of coating is the water repellency found as an attribute to rain gear. As rain gear continues to be used, its effectiveness in repelling rainwater will diminish, but in that case, you can prevent the effects from the outside world by applying a coating agent with a brush, or by spraying it on.

Another example of film formation for the purpose of lubrication is the constant velocity joints in automobiles. Constant velocity joints have a mechanism to transmit the power from the engine to the tires, so it is necessary to consider not only friction but also load capacity due to seizure. Therefore, using molybdenum grease, etc., which also has load-bearing capacity, prevents problems from occurring.

Uses of Coatings

Coatings are used in various applications, such as surface protection of automobiles and prevention of spalling of refractory materials.

First, in the area of ​​automotive surface protection, in addition to the aforementioned lubrication of constant velocity joints, film coatings agents are also used to form films on faded moldings and resin parts. Automobile side mirrors, door visors, wiper arms, lenses, moldings, etc. are made of processed and molded resin, which can become scratched and faded with age. Because the coatings penetrates into the scratches on the surface, it not only improves the aesthetics by adding luster to the faded surface, but also protects the newly formed small scratches.

Refractory bricks and castable refractories used at high temperatures do not have high thermal conductivity, so when they are heated and cooled rapidly, they are destroyed due to the temperature difference between the inside and outside (spalling phenomenon). In order to prevent such problems, coatings can be applied to improve heat resistance, suppress expansion, and prevent rapid cooling.

Wire drawing is a processing method that draws the work material into bar, wire, or tubular form by utilizing the ductility and extensibility of the metal. In the wire drawing process, descaling is performed to increase the reactivity of the wire rod surface.

However, this requires pickling using hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, which causes problems such as sludge and rust. Coatings agents are mainly used during the wire drawing process to help draw in lubricant as the wire is drawn through the dies, but new coatings agents are being developed to solve these problems.

Principle of Coatings

Coatings are generally available in liquid, solid, or powder form.

As an example, the principle of coatings agents in terms of protecting the surface of an object is similar to the principle of surface coatings.

Surface coatings are a mechanism to protect an object by blocking degradation factors that enter from the surface.

For example, surface coatings include surface coatings and surface impregnation materials as concrete construction methods. Surface coverings are a method of covering the surface of concrete with a film, like coatings or sheet. On the other hand, surface impregnating materials are used to modify the surface layer of concrete by adding a protective agent to the surface layer that inhibits water absorption.

There are two types of surface-impregnating materials: silane-type materials (water-repellent) and silicate-type materials (solidifying), but this article discusses only silane-type materials.

Silane-type materials are a type of silicone water-repellent material that combines the hydrophobic group (alkyl group) of silicone with the "-OR" group of alkyl alkoxysilane. Hydrophobic groups face the surface, and the hydrophobic force causes water repellency.

Based on the above, coatings agents work by imparting a protective factor to the surface of the object, similar to the principle of surface coatings used mainly in concrete construction methods.
