High pressure pumps are pumps that operate using differential pressure and have high pressure for suction and discharge.
There is no clear definition of "high pressure" in terms of pressure values.
Depending on the manufacturer, the term "ultra-high pressure pump" is sometimes used for models with a performance of 1,000 MPa or higher, while other manufacturers use the same term for models with a performance of around 300 MPa.
Similarly, a pump that can achieve a high head (the height at which fluid can be pumped) is sometimes called a high pressure pump.
High pressure pumps are used in boiler feed pumps (BFP) for power generation, descaling pumps in the manufacturing process of washing machines, refrigerators, and automobiles, and in desalination technology (producing fresh water from seawater to be used as drinking water in regions with severe water shortages, such as the Middle East). The pumps are also used in a wide range of applications, such as desalination technology.
High pressure pumps are also used in high-pressure washers because of their ability to perform powerful cleaning and stripping with a small amount of water (so-called "jet cleaning").
High pressure pumps are exemplified by centrifugal pumps, which are non-volumetric pumps.
The ability of centrifugal pumps to generate pressure increases in the order of volute pumps, turbine pumps, and multistage volute pumps, and the principles of these types are discussed in turn.
A centrifugal pump has an impeller inside a casing, and a motor is used to rotate the impeller. When liquid is sucked in from the direction of the axis of rotation to which the impeller is attached, the liquid filled inside creates a pressure difference between the center and the periphery as the impeller rotates. When the liquid is sucked in from the low-pressure center, centrifugal force pushes it outward in the direction perpendicular to the shaft (centrifugal direction), and the pressure is further increased in the vortex chamber (volute) inside the casing and finally pumped out through the discharge port.
In the case of turbine pumps, in addition to this, fixed non-rotating blades called guide vanes are arranged around the periphery of the rotating impeller, and the speed of the liquid leaving the impeller is guided to the guide vanes, where it is gradually decelerated as it passes between the guide vanes and converted into pressure energy, which is then used for the discharge. This is how high-pressure liquid is finally discharged.
In a multistage centrifugal pump, the rotating blades and casing are stacked on a single shaft to increase the head in stages, thus enabling an even higher head to be achieved.
