What Is a Sanitary Pump?
A sanitary pump is a pump that can be sanitized. In other words, unlike ordinary pumps, the inside of a sanitary pump is easy to clean, and the risk of bacteria formation is extremely low.
The materials of the wetted parts are also made of materials that can withstand severe cleaning and that will not cause problems even if they come in contact with food.
Structurally, the sanitary pump is designed to be easy to disassemble for cleaning and easy to remove and clean. Therefore, they are generally more expensive.
Uses of Sanitary Pumps
As the name "sanitary" suggests, sanitary pumps are for use in places where a sanitary environment is required.
For example, they are used in the food industry and in factories that manufacture pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and other products that are ingested directly into or act on the human body. In these industries, contamination by foreign substances that could be detrimental to human health is strictly prohibited, as is the generation of bacteria.
Sanitary pumps are widely used in such industries that demand cleanliness in their products. In particular, when resins are used for packing, etc., they are based on the positive list system, so they can be used for food and medical products without any problem.
Principle of Sanitary Pumps
First of all, all sanitary pumps are made of SUS304 or higher, a type of stainless steel. Higher-grade pumps are also made of SUS316L and higher metals.
When used properly, these metals do not rust and can withstand the chemicals used in cleaning, such as caustic soda and sodium hypochlorite. Therefore, they can be used without any problems for internal cleaning using chemicals and high-temperature steam, which is called "cleaning in place (CIP)" or "sterilization in place (SIP)."
The inside is polished to prevent the formation of microscopic fluid pools and the adhesion of foreign matter. Therefore, there is no risk of contamination by bacteria. All joints also use special clamping joints called heels. Therefore, no liquid accumulation occurs at the joints.
By adopting this structure, sanitary pumps can be used in a wide range of applications, such as centrifugal pumps to positive displacement pumps, as well as diaphragm pumps and rotary pumps.
