A valve that lowers (depressurizes) a high-pressure fluid to a certain pressure is called a regulator or pressure reducing valve and refers to pneumatic equipment that handles compressed air.
A precision regulator is a device that can set pressure with high precision among regulators. While general regulators have a repeatability of ±1% of full span, precision regulators have a repeatability of 0.5% of full span.
There are also ultra-precision regulator that boast a repeatability of 0.1% or less.
Precision regulators are used to control pneumatic actuators precisely, such as air cylinders, because they can adjust downstream pressure with high precision. Specific examples of applications include tension control in printing machines and plastic film processing machines, pressure control in polishing machines and cutters, and control of chemical or sample discharge volume.
Air filters and mist separators are installed as in general regulators.
Precision regulators are mainly composed of a valve that divides the primary and secondary sides, a regulating spring connected to the valve, and a relief valve on the secondary side. An adjustment knob is connected to the regulator spring, and the regulator spring's holding force is set by turning the adjustment knob.
When the primary side is higher pressure, compressed air flows into the secondary side if the pressure difference between the primary and secondary sides is greater than the holding force of the pressure regulating spring, and the holding force is balanced. If the secondary side is higher pressure, the secondary side air is released from the relief valve to the outside. As a result of the above mechanism, the pressure difference between the primary and secondary sides is determined by the holding force of the pressure regulating spring, and the pressure on the secondary side can be adjusted.
Some models do not have a relief valve and do not have an exhaust function in case the secondary side becomes high pressure. When the flow rate is high, a pilot operated regulator that uses the secondary side pressure to operate a larger regulator may be used.
