A filter regulator is a device that combines an air filter and a regulator. They are installed in many air tools that require compressed air and can be said to be indispensable in the pneumatic field.
The air filter removes water droplets and dust from compressed air, while the regulator reduces air pressure to the proper level. Although they are originally two separate devices, they are often considered as a set when incorporated into a pneumatic circuit, and pneumatic manufacturers often commercialize them as an integrated unit.
Filter regulators are installed before the solenoid valve that controls the opening and closing of the air. Its purpose is to maintain the performance of the pneumatic equipment and ensure that it operates properly.
Compressed air supplied from factory air compressors contains dirt and moisture, such as dust and dirt. These can adversely affect pneumatic equipment, and if they pass through the solenoid valve as is, they can cause malfunctions and failures. The filter part of the filter regulators is responsible for removing these airborne contaminants.
The role of the regulator is to control the unstable air pressure of compressed air to a constant level. This allows for stable operation without placing an undue load on the pneumatic equipment.

Regular maintenance is required to maintain the performance of the air filter. As part of the work, debris accumulated in the cup should be drained out with a drain cock, and the element should be replaced according to the manufacturer's recommended time.
Direct-acting regulators adjust pressure by means of a spring. When the spring is compressed by the handle, the valve opens through the diaphragm and air moves from the primary side (inlet side) to the secondary side (outlet side). The pressure on the secondary side gradually increases, and when it reaches the set pressure, the thrust by the diaphragm and the spring force balance each other to close the valve.
In the case of the pilot type, instead of the spring, pneumatic pressure reduced by a direct acting regulator is used to set the pressure.
