This section provides an overview for filter tips as well as their applications and principles. Also, please take a look at the list of 10 filter tip manufacturers and their company rankings.

A filter tip is a pipette tip with a filter inside.
A pipette is an instrument used to weigh a liquid sample. A pipette tip is the tip that is attached to the pipette body and actually takes in the liquid, and is usually disposable.
The filter tip prevents the liquid or vapor of the sample from entering the interior of the pipette body if too much liquid is sucked in, preventing "cross-contamination," in which two different samples are mixed together.
Since the filter allows air to pass through but not liquid, liquid can be aspirated and dispensed without impairing the pipette's function.
Filter tips are used when handling samples that may contaminate pipettes or when performing assays that are susceptible to cross-contamination.
Examples of cases that are susceptible to cross-contamination include the use of radioisotopes and the use of DNA and RNA in PCR and other assays.
Samples that may contaminate pipettes include volatile substances, radioactive materials, corrosive materials, and biohazards (pathogenic microorganisms and genetically modified organisms).
Filters used for filter tips are generally made of polyethylene and are hydrophobic.
Depending on the manufacturer and the product, high-density polyethylene, hydrophobic polypro-ethylene, ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene porous sheet, special hydrophobic porous filters, and ultra-high-molecular-weight polystyrene membranes are used.
Air is allowed to pass through, but not liquid, so that even if too much liquid sample is sucked in (over-pipetting), it will not enter the pipette body.
It also prevents aerosols from entering the tip cone (one of the lower parts of the pipette). An aerosol is a mixture of tiny liquid or solid particles suspended in a gas and the surrounding gas.
There are two types of filters: a self-sealing barrier type that blocks liquids from coming in contact with the filter and a non-self-sealing type. Both types prevent cross-contamination.
Filters in which liquid reaches the filter but does not block due to wetting, allow for sample collection.
