What Is a Die Set?

Principle of Die Sets
The structure of die sets consists of a mounting part for mounting on a press, a pressure-receiving part that transmits the pressure of the press to the die or product, and a forming part, that creates the shape of the die or other product.
The most important die part is divided into the punch side (upper side) and the die side (lower side), each of which is housed in a punch holder and die holder.
The parts that transmit these upper and lower presses are the guideposts, guide bushings, knock pins, and other pin holders, which support the vertical movement from the press machine.
Die sets have the advantage of being versatile jigs and tools that allow easy die changes. On the other hand, however, it is important to ensure eccentricity accuracy, which, if not maintained, will adversely affect product quality and the dies. Steel and aluminum alloy types are commonly used.
There are several types of positioning relationships between the guideposts and the mold, such as those with guide posts at four corners, those placed diagonally, and those placed at two locations on either side, depending on the application. There are also two types of guides: a plain type, which is easy to achieve high accuracy, and a ball guide type, which is suitable for larger sizes. In recent years, roller type guides with higher performance have also been introduced.
