An EMC/RFI tester is a piece of equipment used to perform EMC. First, let us explain what EMC is.
As is common knowledge for those who are in charge of EMC measures for products of electrical equipment manufacturers, EMC is translated as "electromagnetic compatibility" in Japanese and "electromagnetic compatibility" in English.
In English, it is called Electro Magnetic Compatibility, abbreviated as EMC.
Next, I will explain electromagnetic compatibility. Simply put, it refers to the ability of an electronic device to withstand the noise it emits to the outside and the external noise that attacks it from the outside. The noise emission is considered emission, and immunity is deemed capable of withstanding external noise.
Furthermore, it is very important for manufacturers who want to sell their products with electronic devices around the world to clear EMC since they cannot sell their products without complying with the laws of each country, which are based on the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law in Japan and the IEC standards in other countries.
Therefore, EMC testing consists of emission testing to measure the noise level generated by electronic equipment and immunity testing to check the level at which electronic equipment can withstand external noise.
EMC/RFI tester is used for these tests.
As explained in the EMC overview, various types of equipment measure the noise generated by electronic equipment or apply noise to electronic equipment.
This noise is measured or applied in an anechoic chamber, a test room where radio waves are completely blocked. And since official certification is required for these laboratories, the number of places where testing can be performed is necessarily limited.
In addition, the cost of so-called certification testing in these limited laboratories is usually several hundred thousand yen per day. The more time it takes, the greater the test cost, which is an issue for electronic equipment manufacturers during development.
As mentioned above, we have explained that EMC testing includes emission testing to check the noise level generated by electronic equipment and immunity testing to check the status of noise immunity.
There are two types of emission (measuring the noise generated) test methods for electronic equipment: conducted and radiated emissions.
Conducted emissions measure the noise generated by electronic equipment using a dedicated noise measurement device called a LISN (commonly known as a listen). Radiated emissions measure the noise received by the antenna. Naturally, these tests are conducted in a place where external noise is completely blocked out, so the measurement system for these emission testers is an extensive testing facility, including the room where the measurements are made.
Next, we will explain the immunity test, in which noise is applied externally to check the level of immunity.
The main types of immunity testing include static electricity testers, square wave impulse noise testers, fast transient burst testers for noise generated by switches and other switchgear, lightning surge testers, and power voltage fluctuation testers (also known as sag or dip testers), and other specialized testing equipment. The EUT is subjected to noise and checked to see if it can withstand the specified value.
Only products that have passed the IEC and other standards through each of the above tests using EMC/RFI testers can be officially sold in the market, obtaining, for example, CE marking certification in the case of Europe.
