Table of Contents
An anechoic box is a box-shaped electromagnetic wave shielding device covered with electromagnetic shielding material to prevent the transmission of electromagnetic waves from the outside to the inside and the leakage of electromagnetic waves generated inside to the outside without reflection.
A similar function is provided by an anechoic chamber, which, as the name suggests, is a room for shielding electromagnetic waves and is a very large facility. Anechoic boxes, on the other hand, are smaller and less expensive.
Anechoic boxes cover electromagnetic waves and high-frequency wave-related measuring instruments. They are box-shaped and can contain measuring objects, and some products are even sold in a portable form.
Anechoic boxes are widely used to evaluate wireless systems without external electromagnetic influence or to measure electromagnetic waves of unauthorized frequency signals outside during development. Careful attention should be paid when conducting tests in the development of systems and related products that use wireless communications, such as mobile networks, wireless LANs, and RFIDs.
This is because at the testing stage, products in the process of development have not yet been certified as conforming to technical standards, and any leakage of signal radio waves to the outside would be a violation of the Radio Law. Echoic boxes are used to prevent this situation. Conversely, an anechoic chamber is also used for measurement purposes to eliminate the influence of radio waves in use outside.
The same purpose can be achieved in an anechoic chamber, but since the installation of an anechoic chamber also requires a very expensive listing, anechoic boxes are easier to install if the object to be tested is not so large.
The principle of an anechoic box is that the interior of the box is covered with a material that absorbs electromagnetic waves, called a radio wave absorber, and the effect of these waves can be eliminated during the evaluation process. In addition to blocking electromagnetic waves from inside and outside, anechoic boxes must also prevent the reflection of electromagnetic waves inside when used for testing purposes.
For this reason, the interior of anechoic boxes is covered with a radio wave absorber. The material used for the radio wave absorber is baked ferrite, or ferrite particles, or carbon kneaded into urethane resin. The absorber can be used to absorb radio waves over a wide frequency range. In this process, a gradient in the concentration of ferrite and carbon is applied to achieve radiowave absorption over a wide frequency band.
In practice, however, achieving a gradient by painting is not feasible from a manufacturing cost perspective. Therefore, we processed them into a pyramid-like structure and lined them up to obtain the effect of layered absorbing materials.
Therefore, the interior walls of anechoic boxes and anechoic chambers have this three-dimensional geometric shape. By changing the height of the pyramid peaks according to the shielding characteristics of the radio wave absorbing material, it is possible to control the frequency of the electromagnetic waves that can be absorbed, etc.
The frequency band that can be shielded by anechoic boxes is generally from 700 MHz to 6 GHz (Sub6GHz), which is the Low Band of the microwave band. However, some models can evaluate frequencies up to about 30 GHz in the millimeter wave band.
Although the higher frequencies can be handled comparatively well, the longer wavelengths of the lower frequencies require high technological capabilities to achieve both miniaturization and compatibility. By combining multiple absorbers, each company is trying to increase the bandwidth of the shielded frequency.
Typical performance indicators of anechoic boxes are the frequency at which radio waves can be shielded and the amount of reflection attenuation, which indicates the shielding of those electromagnetic waves. As a rule of thumb, a reflection attenuation (absolute value) of 10dB is almost ineffective, while 20dB is a minimum level of shielding.
The average value is between 30 and 60 dB, which is exactly the level at which a cellular phone cannot recognize the signal and is treated as out of range. Therefore, a shielding effectiveness of 60 dB at the desired radio frequency is a standard performance index. It is also not desirable for the distribution value of reflection attenuation, which is the performance index of shielding effectiveness, to vary greatly inside an anechoic box.
Each manufacturer has its ingenuity in the arrangement of the radio wave absorber so that the antenna is stored inside the anechoic box and the distribution of the reflection attenuation is such that the desired variation is suppressed based on the distribution of the directivity of radio waves.
