A drop tester is a device that allows an object to be dropped naturally under the required height and other conditions in order to determine the impact and effects of dropping the object.
In particular, easily portable and compact smartphones and mobile devices need to be protected against the impact of drops in their environment of use. In order to improve the shock resistance of such devices, highly reproducible drop tests are conducted and utilized in development. Drop tester is also used to test the impact resistance of heavy cargo and packaging materials.
Drop testers are used to examine the effects of impact when an object is dropped, and the method specified by JIS or other standards is selected according to the product. The tester is particularly applicable to heavy cargo, packaging materials, unit loads, and palletized cargo, but it is also used for durability testing of individual products. The minimum drop test is about 1 cm, and the maximum is about 1 m.
There are models that drop small, lightweight electrical appliances such as cell phones and remote controls, electronic components, food, medicine, etc., and models that test large, packed cargo weighing approximately 20 kg.
The principle of drop testers can be divided into four main types: the holding drop type, the rotating drum type, the rotating arm type, and the electromagnetic hook type.
The holding drop type has a simple structure and uses a pneumatic pen cylinder to clamp and secure the object horizontally. When the object is dropped naturally from a set height, the cylinder separates from the object during the fall, allowing only the object to fall. This method is effective when you want to drop the object at the same angle.
In the rotating drum type, the object is placed in the drum and the drum is rotated at a constant speed. The object can be repeatedly dropped in the drum at random.
The rotating arm type has a drop test mechanism using an air-driven cylinder and a spring. After the table carrying the object is moved at high speed by the air cylinder, the table is rotated by the tension of a strong spring to make the object fall naturally in a vertical direction.
The electromagnetic hook type is a device in which cargo suspended by electromagnetic hooks falls naturally when the hooks are released.
In either case, the height at which the object is dropped can be set freely. In addition, the drop operation can be set either by remote control or by a control panel. Some of them are equipped with a high-speed camera to analyze the drop.
Depending on the type of industrial product involved in the production of industrial products, JIS (Japan Industrial Standards) standards are applied to drop testing. For example, the Fire Service Law and the High Pressure Gas Conservation Law are examples of laws and regulations that apply to factories and equipment. These laws are standardized to prevent accidents from occurring in the first place.
JIS standards that are usually applied to drop tests include JISZ0119, which is a product impact strength test method, and JISZ0200, which is a performance test for packaged cargo. There are various types of tests, and the applicable standard must be investigated as necessary. Other standards applicable to drop tests include JISZ0202, a drop test method for packaged cargo, JISC60068-2-31 Ea, an impact test method, and JISC60068-2-31 Ec, a drop and fall test method. JISZ0119 describes the test procedure for measuring the strength of a product against impact.
After products are manufactured, they are packed and transported before reaching the user. However, there is a risk that the product may be dropped during transportation, and a drop test in the packing box is desirable in order to maintain the product's appearance and performance. And how the product will be used by the user must also be considered.
If the product is a medium or large-sized home appliance, it is assumed to be used in a stationary position, but for a cell phone, a drop test from a position half its height is desirable.
If the product is to be used in a stationary position, a drop test from the height of a truck when loading cargo can be considered in order to study the drop in the distribution process. The problem here is the loading procedure. It can be loaded manually, with a forklift, or with a crane if the cargo is too heavy to be loaded under special conditions. Therefore, simply dropping a product from a certain height is not enough to reproduce the failure of the product. For these reasons, it is necessary to consider dropping a product while turning it.
In addition to the above, for cell phones and other such devices, we can assume that the object is not only dropped but also accelerated, so we conduct impact tests by physically applying velocity.
