■What Is Electroless Boron Plating?

Apart from common electroless nickel-phosphorus plating, there is electroless nickel-boron (boron alloy) plating. Using a boron compound as the reducing agent produces a nickel-boron film, giving it properties different from those of electroless nickel-phosphorus plating. Electroless nickel-boron plating is used for parts requiring properties such as electrical conductivity, solder wettability, brazability, bondability, heat resistance, wear resistance, mold releasability, hardness, and seizure prevention.

■Heat Treatment of Electroless Boron Plating

Electroless nickel-boron (Ni-B) is about 700 HV as deposited and reaches a maximum of about 1,000 to 1,300 HV with heat treatment. Electroless nickel-phosphorus plating is 500 to 700 HV as deposited and reaches a maximum of 950 to 1,000 HV with heat treatment. Since it is very hard even as deposited, at about HV 700, excellent coating hardness can be obtained in the as-deposited state even for products that cannot be heat-treated.
