■What Is Electroless Nickel Plating (NiP)?Electroless nickel plating (NiP), also called chemical plating, is a method of plating not only metals but also other materials such as resins through chemical reduction, literally without using a power supply. Electroless nickel plating is widely used in industry, mainly for applications aimed at imparting wear resistance and corrosion resistance.

It can also be applied to all kinds of metal materials, plastics, ceramics, and more, and can plate even complex shapes uniformly without unevenness in film thickness. In addition, its many mechanical, electrical, and physical properties are highly valued, and it is used in a variety of fields.

■Key Points・Electroless nickel plating deposits through a reduction reaction and therefore requires no electricity.
・Because electroless nickel plating uses no electricity, it can be applied even to non-conductive (insulating) materials and complex shapes.
・Since electroless nickel plating is unaffected by current distribution, it produces a uniform plating coating.
・Depending on the phosphorus content in the coating, post-plating heat treatment, and other factors, electroless nickel plating can provide coatings with special properties.

■Coating Properties of Electroless Nickel PlatingElectroless nickel plating coatings are classified into three types according to phosphorus content: high phosphorus, medium phosphorus, and low phosphorus.

■Thick Electroless Nickel PlatingIn addition to the coating properties of electroless nickel, film thicknesses of up to 200 µm can be achieved, providing high durability and corrosion resistance. Thick deposits allow post-processing, enabling machining that demands high surface accuracy. Furthermore, thanks to the uniform film thickness, the thickness unevenness that occurred with hard chrome plating is eliminated.
