A balun, an acronym for balanced-to-unbalanced, and is a compound word. It is a device that alternately converts balanced signals and unbalanced signals.
In addition to signal conversion, baluns may also simultaneously perform impedance conversion using a transformer, and are used for antenna connection points and for matching circuits on MMIC semiconductor chips, such as differential amplifiers for high-frequency applications.
Baluns are commonly used in TV and wireless communication systems to convert signals from high-frequency signal outputs to antennas, often with a characteristic impedance of 1:1 or 1:4. For example, the former is used for conversion between 75 ohms and the latter for conversion from 50 ohms to 200 ohms.
Baluns are mainly available in the form of small surface-mounted components using low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrates, etc., or wire-wound baluns using toroidal cores.
Baluns are devices that convert alternating balanced and unbalanced signals, as described above. Balanced (differential) signals have their phases shifted 180 degrees on the positive (plus) and negative (minus) sides, and the pairs of reciprocating signals are symmetrical and cancel each other out. This circuit is capable of suppressing common-mode noise. In contrast, an unbalanced signal, for example, means a mode of propagation in which one side is GND and the round-trip signals are clearly distinct.
There are two types of baluns: voltage baluns and current baluns.
In the case of voltage baluns, the GND terminal of the unbalanced signal is connected to the midpoint of the inductor on the balanced signal terminal side, and the pair of inductors generate an electromotive voltage in the opposite direction to produce a balanced voltage.
In current baluns, for example, an inductor is inserted in series between the antenna and the coaxial cable. A going current flows from the signal source of the unbalanced circuit on the center conductor side, and a reverse current flows toward the opposing coil to counteract this current. This is the principle, and in the case of pole baluns, the circuit symbol is the same as for a common mode choke coil.
