This section provides an overview for rf modulators as well as their applications and principles. Also, please take a look at the list of 15 rf modulator manufacturers and their company rankings.
Table of Contents
An RF modulator is a circuit block or stand-alone external unit that converts baseband video and audio (AV) signals into RF signals (Radio Frequency: signals in the broadcast frequency band).
The video and audio baseband signals are input to the RF modulator through a PIN terminal connector or other dedicated terminals in the signal connection configuration. These signals are converted internally and output from the RF coaxial cable.
Since RF modulators as stand-alone external units are rarely used today, they are no longer produced by the manufacturer. The only way to obtain one is from a second-hand source on the Internet.
RF modulators were commonly used when the NES and Super NES were sold.
The AV signal output from the NES and Super NES was a baseband analog signal that was usually connected to the video input terminal on the TV.
However, at the time, many of the 14-inch class low-priced televisions did not have a video input terminal.
So, video game console manufacturers prepared RF modulators to promote their products.
The NES AV output is connected to RF modulators, converted to an RF signal internally, and then connected to the TV's antenna terminal.
RF modulators convert the input baseband AV signal into a specified broadcast wave signal by converting the video and audio signals to their respective levels and then applying frequency modulation. Normally, RF converters convert VHF band broadcast signals (90 to 220 MHz).
Since RF modulators can convert baseband analog AV signals into broadcast frequency signals, it is possible to view these broadcasts using CRT or LCD televisions that may be around the home, not equipped with video terminals, and cannot receive terrestrial digital or BS digital broadcasts. However, it is possible to view these broadcasts using an external terrestrial broadcasting system.
However, this requires an external, stand-alone tuner capable of receiving terrestrial digital and BS digital broadcasts. Naturally, HDD and DVD/BD recorders are also acceptable. These devices have at least one unit of terrestrial digital and BS digital tuners built-in, and some have analog AV output terminals.
By taking the baseband terrestrial digital and BS digital broadcast AV signals output from these various recorders into an RF modulator, signal conversion is performed inside the modulator, and the RF signal output is connected to the RF terminal of a CRT or LCD TV. This enables digital broadcasts to be viewed on these televisions.
