What Is an Expansion Joint?
An expansion joint is a type of pipe fitting that connects, changes the direction of, and branches pipes, and is a movable pipe fitting that can absorb axial expansion and contraction of pipes due to temperature changes.
Expansion joints not only connect pipes. They also absorb the expansion and contraction of pipes (due to changes in the temperature of the fluid that passes through the pipes, and the outside temperature of the pipes). Adjust misalignment of pipes (due to ground subsidence, dampen vibration of pumps, turbines, compressors, and other equipment) and protect pipes from mechanical trouble.
Uses of Expansion Joints
Expansion joints are used in various fields as direct piping fittings because they connect pipes and have the function of preventing expansion, contraction, misalignment, and bending of pipes due to temperature changes, ground subsidence, vibration, and other factors.
Specifically, it is used in lifelines such as water pipes, drainage pipes, and gas pipes. As well as in piping, exhaust/exhaust gas/ventilation systems, dust collection, and soot collection systems in oil and chemical plants, steel mills, and power plants, incinerator air ducts in waste disposal facilities, vacuum drive units in semiconductor manufacturing plants, and exhaust systems of diesel engines in ships. They are used to absorb pipe expansion and contraction, absorb misalignment, dampen vibration, and prevent ground subsidence and earthquakes.
Features of Expansion Joints
There are three types of expansion joints: sleeve type, bellows type, and vented type.
- Sleeve type:
The packing between the outer and inner tubes maintains confidentiality while the two tubes move according to the expansion and contraction of the piping, absorbing the expansion and contraction of the piping. While the sleeve-type expansion joints have the advantage of large expansion and contraction, there is a risk of leakage due to deterioration of the packing. - Bellows type
A metal bellow absorbs the expansion and contraction of piping. Bellows-type expansion joints are completely sealed, so there is no risk of leakage, but there is a possibility of fatigue failure due to repeated expansion and contraction.
For bellows-type expansion joints to operate effectively, a fixing point must be provided at both ends. Therefore, the installation of bellows-type expansion joints has the limitation that there must be a place to install the anchorage points.
In addition, the fixed point is subject to the spring reaction force when the bellows are displaced and the static thrust force that tries to extend the bellows in the axial direction when the internal pressure increases. Therefore, the fixed point must be strong enough to withstand these forces.
- Bent type:
The piping has a U-shape, Ω-shape, or loop shape in the middle of the pipe, and this part absorbs the expansion, contraction, deflection, and torsion of the piping. While its simple structure makes it more durable, it also has the disadvantage of requiring more space for installation.
