Helical Couplings, also known as metal slit couplings, are fully integrated metal couplings with a spiral slit in a cylindrical material.
A helical coupling is used when it is difficult to make the coupling concentric and when the rotational motion is to be transmitted to another rotating body.
There are two types of couplings for fixing: the set screw type and the clamp type.
Helical Couplings are characterized by the fact that they do not twist and have no backlash in the direction of rotation, thus enabling accurate transmission of rotational motion.
Helical couplings are used to connect a drive shaft and a driven shaft of a motor (servomotor or stepping motor) or a rotary cylinder to transmit power. In particular, it is also used in places where eccentricity and deflection between shafts, misalignment of end play occurs, and shaft diameters are different.
The 1-jaw slit model is used when deflection is required, and the 2-jaw slit model is used when high torsional rigidity is required.
It is used for transmitting rotational motion such as motors to another mechanism without backlash, such as encoders, medical machines, optical equipment, stages, etc.
By connecting a drive shaft and a driven shaft via Helical Couplings, power can be transmitted while absorbing misalignment between the parts. In addition, it can absorb the vibration and shock of the equipment and prevent the uneven wear of the bearing, contributing to the long life of the equipment.
The maximum speed, maximum torque, and normal operating torque are specified, and must be used under conditions where the torque is not exceeded. When using forward and reverse rotation, the normal torque value is halved.
There are other types of couplings such as rigid type that is not flexible but can transmit power reliably and has high rigidity, and disk type that allows misalignment by flexing of metal springs. Helical Couplings can be said to be well-balanced couplings that satisfy all the functions required for couplings on average.
