Sanitary fittings, also called sanitary fittings, are used in piping where cleanliness is required. In other words, they are often used in industries that produce food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and other products that are directly ingested by or act on the human body.
Although normal piping fittings may have some accumulation in the joints, it is not a major problem.
However, in industries where cleanliness is required, bacteria and foreign matter generated in the pools can be a major problem, which is why sanitary fittings are often used.
As mentioned above, ferrules are also called sanitary piping or sanitary fittings. Sanitary means hygienic. Because they can be assembled and disassembled without the need for tools, they are used in areas that are frequently removed for cleaning and other purposes.
Sanitary fittings are characterized by the absence of irregularities inside the piping, which makes them excellent for cleaning. The risk of foreign matter contamination and bacteria formation can be reduced due to the lack of liquid accumulation. Because of these features, sanitary fittings are used in fields related to pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food products.
A ferrule consists of three parts: a ferrule pipe, a gasket, and a clamping band. The flange portion of the ferrule pipe has a groove engraved on it. On the other hand, the gasket used is not of the usual flat structure, but has a protrusion to fit the groove of the ferrule piping. When connecting two ferrule pipes, a special gasket is connected between them to ensure a tight seal. The connected flanges are secured by fastening them together with a clamping band. Tightening can be done by hand, so no tools are required.
Because of the piping construction, there are multiple fittings, such as elbows, cheeses, sockets, and nipples. Ferrule caps are used to provide end closure, such as when not joining piping or components.
Gaskets can be changed depending on the fluid used. The most common is a white silicone gasket. Various other types have been developed, including PTFE, fluoroelastomer, EPDM, NBR, and Saniclean.
To install a ferrule coupling, fit the ferrule gasket into the groove engraved on the flange, butt it against the flange to be connected, and clamp the flange with a ferrule clamp and tighten it.
If dust or foreign matter adheres to the groove of the flange or the gasket during installation, sealing performance will not be ensured and may cause leaks. Also, be careful not to tighten the gasket if it is not properly seated in the groove, as this will damage the gasket. It is advisable to keep several spare stocks of gaskets.
Most of the items commonly used for sanitary applications are ISO-standard products, but care should be taken to ensure that they cannot be installed with other standards that differ from each other. Even if they are the same ISO standard product, the shape of the gasket groove may be slightly different between products of different manufacturers, so it is basically safe to use the same manufacturer's product for all piping in one process.
Sanitary fittings are mainly designed for ease of installation and removal, so they do not have high pressure resistance. Generally, it is recommended to use sanitary fittings within the range of 1 MPa or less. Since pressure resistance varies depending on the corrosiveness of the fluid, temperature, and other factors, use within a range with a margin of safety.
On the low pressure side, it can be used up to a certain level of low pressure and low vacuum, but for higher vacuum, the NW/KF standard for vacuum is used. The NW/KF standard flange can achieve a high vacuum of about 10^-7 Pa.
Since pressure resistance may be impaired by scratches on the flange surface, deterioration of the gasket, or contamination, care must be taken in handling to prevent deterioration of the intermeshing parts.
