What Is a Variable Capacitor?
A variable capacitor is a capacitor whose capacity can be changed. It is also called a variable capacitor, sometimes abbreviated as a varicapacitor.
Two plates are arranged to overlap, and the capacitor's capacitance can be varied by moving one of the plates while the other is fixed.
The capacitance can be varied by changing the area where the two plates overlap when the plates are moved.
Uses of Variable Capacitors
Variable capacitors have traditionally been used for amateur radio and radio tuning.
However, today, in addition to the fact that varicons are very expensive, most of the station selection processes in equipment have been digitized. As a result, varicons are rarely used today.
As a result, varicons are rarely used today and are manufactured only in minimal quantities, although some amateur radio operators and electronics enthusiasts still use varicons in their work.
Principle of Variable Capacitors
There are two types of varicons: air varicons and poly varicons. In the case of air varicons, the space between the fixed plate and the movable plate is air, and an electric charge accumulates there, acting as a capacitor.
The capacity of air varicons can be as high as about 2000 pF.
In the case of polyvaricon, polyethylene is sandwiched between a fixed plate and a movable plate. Compared to air varicons, polyvaricons have a smaller capacitance and are only available in capacitance ranges from 200 to 400 pF.
