What Are Formaldehyde Detectors?
Formaldehyde Detectors are devices that measure the concentration of formaldehyde in a room.
Formaldehyde is a compound with the chemical formula CH2O.
It has a boiling point of -19.5°C (roughly -3°F) and is a gas at room temperature. It is colorless but has a pungent odor.

Uses of Formaldehyde Detectors
Formaldehyde is used in many everyday products such as antiseptics, disinfectants, paints, adhesives, deodorizers, and surfactants.

Principle of Formaldehyde Detectors
Formaldehyde Detectors automatically inhale indoor gases and measure the concentration of formaldehyde using either the constant potential electrolysis method or the photoelectric photometry method.
- Constant Potential Electrolysis Method
When formaldehyde or other gases are inhaled between a working electrode and a reference electrode whose potential is maintained at a constant level, electrolysis occurs at the working electrode. The current generated at this time is proportional to the concentration of the gas, and is used to measure the concentration of the gas. - Photoelectric photometry
This method consists of a test paper impregnated with a reagent that develops a color when exposed to formaldehyde, and a photoelectric converter that detects the color change. The concentration of the gas is measured from the change in coloration intensity of the test paper before and after gas inhalation.
