An RC servo is a small servo motor for radio control. Originally, RC servo motors were mainly used for radio control of cars and airplanes, but recently they have been widely used as joints for robots, and there are RC servo motors specifically for robots from various manufacturers.
An RC servo motor consist of a microcontroller, motor, reduction gear, and position sensor, and can be stopped at any angle by supplying a signal.
Because of their small size and light weight, but high torque, RC servomotors are mainly used in radio-controlled toys. In recent years, the performance of servomotors has evolved remarkably, and they are now widely used not only in hobby applications but also in small robots.
One of the reasons for their adoption is that they are inexpensive and can easily be used to realize various movements without specialized knowledge of control engineering.
Most RC servo motors have three parallel wires glued together as shown below. By inputting pulse-like signals to these signal wires, the motor can be moved to any angle. The connector shape is a female connector with 2.54mm pitch.
Each RC servo motors has defined rotational position and direction in relation to pulses, and by inputting pulse-like signals according to these specifications, the motor can be moved to any angle. Generally, the specification is to add HIGH pulses of "15 to 20 mS cycle" and "0.5 to 2.5 mS width". Since the position of rotation depends on the width of the pulses, it is necessary to input a signal that matches the specifications.
