A DPSS laser is an LD-pumped solid-state laser (Diode Pumped Solid State Laser), which is a type of solid-state laser that uses a high-power semiconductor laser (Laser Diode, or LD for short) as the pump light.
LDs can emit light at a single wavelength and can be pumped efficiently.
LDs generate little heat and have a long life, making them compact, lightweight, and easy to use for a long life.
DPSS lasers are used as light sources for high-resolution imaging devices, confocal microscopes, and DNA sequencing in the biotechnology field, and as light sources for fluorescence spectrometers and Raman spectrometers in the measurement field, as well as for high-speed flow velocity particle measurement. DPSS lasers with deep-ultraviolet single longitudinal mode are also used as light sources for UV Raman spectrometers and fluorescence imaging.
In addition to the measurement field, DPSS lasers are also used as a light source for laser processing due to their high output power and compact oscillator.
DPSS lasers can be configured in a variety of ways, but here is an example.
The DPSS lasers consists of an LD as an excitation light source, a lens system to focus the LD light onto a laser crystal, a laser crystal for laser oscillation, a nonlinear crystal for wavelength conversion, a pair of mirrors for resonance between the laser crystal and nonlinear crystal, and a lens to collimate the output laser beam.
The laser crystal is made of Nd:YVO4 or Yb:YAG, and the nonlinear crystal is made of KTP or BBP.
For example, when Nd:YVO4 is used as the laser crystal, it can be excited by an LD with a wavelength of 808 nm and emit an infrared light of 1064 nm. This infrared light can be converted to a green laser light of 532 nm by KTP, a nonlinear crystal. Furthermore, the 532nm light can be converted to a 266nm UV laser light by using a nonlinear crystal, BBP crystal.
DPSS lasers can output UV and visible light of various wavelengths by wavelength conversion.
