About This Product

■What Is Hard Chrome Plating?

Hard chrome plating, also known as "industrial chrome plating," has a history of about 100 years since its practical application. It has a mirror-like luster, high corrosion resistance, and resistance to discoloration. It also possesses the characteristics of an industrial surface treatment, such as high hardness, excellent wear resistance, low friction coefficient, excellent mold releasability, and excellent corrosion resistance.

■Coating Properties of Hard Chrome Plating

・High Hardness Hard chrome plating is the hardest among ordinary electroplating processes, far harder than heat-treated steel or nitrided steel. (Hv 800 to 1,000) ・Heat Resistance The hardness of hard chrome plating changes with heat treatment, gradually decreasing up to 200 to 400°C and dropping sharply above 400°C. Above 800°C, it settles at Hv 200 to 300, the value of ordinary chromium metal. This is thought to be due to the crystals of electrodeposited chromium breaking down and recrystallizing at around 500°C. Heat treatment to relieve hydrogen embrittlement of the plating is performed at around 200°C, where the structure of the electrodeposited chromium is not affected. ・Low Friction Coefficient The friction coefficient of hard chrome plating is extremely low, the lowest among commonly used materials. ・Wear Resistance This is the most important fundamental property required of hard chrome plating, and it is extremely good. ・Corrosion Resistance Hard chrome plating is stable against chemicals other than chlorides, and coatings with a thickness of 10 µm or more show relatively good corrosion resistance even in the atmosphere. ・Mold Releasability Hard chrome plating is generally considered to have good mold releasability. This is because the surface energy of the metal itself is lower than that of other metals. Taking water repellency as an example, when a water droplet is placed on steel and on chrome plating, the results are: Contact angle between steel and water droplet: 40° Contact angle between chrome plating and water droplet: 70° This also shows that chrome plating resists adhesion and has good releasability.
