What Is a Rotary Damper?
A rotary damper is a device installed in closing parts such as piano covers, to allow them to collapse safely and slowly.
When a door or a lid is not treated, it opens and closes at different speeds depending on the amount of force applied. The more force that is applied, the faster it closes. However, with the use of a rotary damper, this closing speed is almost constant regardless of the amount of force applied, thus increasing safety and reducing the noise generated when closing.
Uses of Rotary Dampers
Rotary dampers are used on furniture doors, vending machine exit doors, measuring instruments, and other locations where sudden closing or opening could cause injury.
Rotary dampers are very effective devices when using materials such as glass, which are vulnerable to impact and easily damaged, because it operates slowly, thus reducing impact. In addition, they are used to give the product a more appealing fashion during use.
Principle of Rotary Dampers
Rotary dampers use a highly viscous liquid such as silicon oil. When a rotor rotates in this highly viscous liquid, it receives resistance from the liquid and braking torque is obtained. In a liquid, the faster the rotor rotates, the more resistance increases. Applying this principle, the faster the rotor rotates, the stronger the braking torque that can be obtained.
Since this is a simple mechanism using a liquid, the speed is not completely constant regardless of the force. In addition, the viscosity of the liquid changes depending on the temperature, so in the summer when the temperature is high, the viscosity decreases, and in winter when the temperature is low, the closing speed becomes slower.
Torque is generated whether the rotary dampers turns clockwise or counterclockwise, but a type with a built-in clutch can generate braking torque in only one direction.
