A cotter pin is a pin with one side of the split pin machined into a wavy shape.
They are also called "R pins" or "pine needle pins." The straight side is inserted into the hole of a bolt, etc., and simply pushed in to prevent it from falling out.
Cotter pins are used in a wide range of fields, including general machinery, automobiles, and agricultural machinery, as they can easily prevent the loosening and loosening of tubular parts such as bolts and pipes.
Snap pins are used not only in the industrial field but also in fields involving the public, such as beds and wheelchairs. There are many products used for similar purposes, such as split pins, clip rings, and figure-8 rings.
Two types of cotter pins are specified. One is called "shaft hole type," in which the straight side is inserted into the shaft hole of a bolt, etc.
The other is called "shaft-groove type," which has wavy processing on both sides of the bend, resembling the shape of a human being, and is inserted into the groove of a bolt, etc., on both sides.
The difference between the three types of shaft-hole types is whether the U-shaped side is folded back and whether or not the tip of the wavy processed side is folded back. The shaft-groove type is one with a human shape and the second with a double ring.
C-cotter pins are mainly made of springy wire like piano wire, which is further annealed to increase toughness and plated to increase air resistance.
