A relay box is a device used to store and centrally control multiple "relays" in an electric circuit.
Relays are essential components for controlling equipment. Since many relays are used in complex equipment and facilities, it is not uncommon for them to be difficult to manage. Therefore, when they are boxed together at a single point as a relay box, multiple devices can be centrally controlled.
For example, if a relay box is created to manage four lights in one place, it is possible to turn on and off the four lights without going to the trouble of turning them on and off.
This section describes the uses of relay boxes.
Relay boxes are used in machines that require multiple electrical controls, such as automobiles and machine tools.
Relay boxes has three main roles.
The first is used as a switch for small to large currents.
The second is used to transmit electrical signals from a DC power source (direct current source) to an AC power source (alternating current source) device.
The third is used to take output from one input to multiple channels.
This section describes the principle of relay boxes.
A relay consists of a coil wound around an iron core to receive electrical signals and a contact (switch) to turn the current on and off. When current flows through the coil, an electromagnet produces a magnetic field around it, which closes the movable contact made of a piece of iron. Then, the current of the intended electric circuit can flow. When the electricity is cut off, the magnetic field of the coil disappears and the contacts are again disconnected.
A structure that switches the current on and off in this manner is called a mechanical relay. Since the coil and contacts are physically separated, insulation is maintained on the input and output sides.
On the other hand, a contactless relay without contacts (MOS FET relay) has recently been introduced to the market. Since these relays have only semiconductors as contacts, they do not mechanically open and close. This has the advantage of being quiet and having a long service life.
In relay boxes, multiple relays are connected to make a circuit, so that multiple devices can be switched on and off.
