A high-frequency relay is one of the elements that switch high-frequency signals (a unit component of an electric or mechanical circuit that plays an important role in the overall function as a component of the circuit). High-frequency relays generally do not have connectors and are used by soldering. Therefore, their high-frequency characteristics are greatly affected by the substrate. In addition, when relays are used in high-frequency circuits, there are the problems of (1) isolation (signal leakage between contacts (circuits) when contacts are open) and (2) insertion loss (signal loss when contacts are closed).
To control high-frequency signals, a relay specialized for high-frequency is needed, not an ordinary relay. High-frequency relays are used in equipment with circuits called high-frequency circuits. Examples include cell phone base stations, broadcasting equipment, measuring instruments, and radio equipment. They are also used in wireless LAN and Bluetooth, which are widely used in homes. All of these devices play the role of smoothly switching signals inside various types of equipment.
The structure of a high-frequency relay is similar to that of an ordinary relay. In a relay, when a small amount of electricity flows through a coil wound around an iron core, electromagnets attract pieces of iron that make contact with the contact points, connecting the circuit and allowing a large amount of electricity to flow directly from the power source to the electrical components. When the electricity between the terminals is cut off, the magnetic field generated in the coil is dissipated and the electrical equipment stops operating. Generally, when relays are used in high-frequency circuits, isolation and insertion loss become problems. Isolation is the leakage that increases as the frequency increases, causing interference between circuits. Insertion loss is the loss of signal between contacts (circuits) that increases as frequency increases, making it impossible to transmit signals accurately and causing heat to be generated. In other words, it is important that there is little signal leakage between contacts when they are open and little signal loss when they are closed, even when the signal frequency increases.
In addition, since relays used in high-frequency circuits require high-frequency characteristics in addition to general relay characteristics and large isolation and small insertion loss as described above, return loss, which indicates the degree of signal reflection, should be large, VSWR should be small, and characteristics indicating resistance values impedance must be appropriate.
