What Is a Junction Box?
A junction box is a device that collects the electricity generated by each solar panel and sends it to the power conditioner. Each solar panel block is connected in series with a diode to prevent reverse current, etc., and the power conditioner collects the power generated by each solar panel in the block into the junction box. The power conditioner converts the generated DC current into AC current.
Each block is wired to a device called a switchgear in the junction box. The switchgear has a switch function like a distribution board breaker, so it can check the flow of electricity.
Uses of Junction Boxes
Junction boxes are used to aggregate electricity generated by photovoltaic power generation systems.
Because they are often installed outdoors, installers place them in locations that are protected from rain, such as under roof sheds, or on exterior walls where they can be easily maintained.
Junction boxes are available in outdoor and indoor versions. The outdoor version is waterproof, which increases the cost. On the other hand, installation of indoor junction boxes requires a large amount of wiring from the solar panels to the interior, so large holes must be drilled into the exterior wall.
Principle of Junction Boxes
A single circuit consisting of the positive and negative poles of multiple solar panels connected in series by PV cables is called a string. Generally, a string consists of 20 solar panels. The junction box contains small breakers corresponding to the number of panels in the string, and multiple small breakers are wired to a single placer. Multiple thin PV cables can be combined into one thick PV cable and routed to the power conditioner via the junction box. If multiple PV cables are all routed in series to the power conditioner without using junction boxes, power may be lost due to voltage drop. Also, the thin PV cables that make up a string are not suitable for long-distance wiring.
By installing a small breaker for each string, only the necessary parts of the system can be accessed for inspection and maintenance without having to turn off all power. The same applies when replacing parts such as solar panels.
To prevent equipment failure in the event of lightning strikes, lightning protection elements and other devices are built in.
