What Is an HSS End Mill?
An HSS end mill is a tool used primarily for machining square metal or non-metal objects. Unlike a twist drill, which drills a normal hole, the tool itself is rotated and given a straight feed motion to expand the hole in the horizontal direction.
End mills are divided into two types, depending on the material. These two materials are HSS and cemented carbide. HSS refers to those made of HSS (high-speed steel), and cemented carbide refers to those made of cemented carbide. HSS is the mainstream, but cemented carbide is suitable for cutting materials with high hardness.
Uses of HSS End Mills
HSS end mills are used as machining tools for milling machines. A total of three axes of relative feed motion are given to both the workpiece and the tool to perform a wide range of machining such as flat and side surfaces, grooves and pockets, chamfering, and mortising. This allows the machine to cut out molds, form gear keyways, and more.
There is also a very wide range of tool types. There are differences in components such as the blade, shank shape, and number of blades, and each one has a wide variety of features. Therefore, it is important to select the most suitable tool after considering the shape and depth of the machined surface and dimensional accuracy.
Principle of HSS End Mills
HSS end mills consist of the following three elements:
- Bottom Cutting Edge
The square end has a flat bottom and is suitable for machining horizontal and side surfaces. Its counterpart is the ball end, which has a round bottom and is suitable for machining curved surfaces. The radius end is an intermediate type between the two. It is best suited for R-machining and pick-feed machining of corner wall parts. - Peripheral Flute
The most widely handled type is the ordinary blade, which can be used for a wide range of applications, from roughing to finishing.
Rafting blades have a wavy blade shape. This wavy blade improves chip evacuation and reduces cutting resistance, making it ideal for roughing. However, it is not suitable for finishing because it is somewhat difficult to sharpen the finished surface cleanly.
Tapered blades have a tapered outer edge shape. They are used for forming mold relief and inlays.
- Shank
Straight shanks are the mainstream. Long shanks have a longer shank than straight shanks and are suitable for deep drilling.
Long-neck shanks are characterized by a partial neck, which is useful for deep grooving.
Tapered-neck shanks have a tapered neck and are ideal for deep grooving near a wall with a slope.
