This section provides an overview for side cutter as well as their applications and principles. Also, please take a look at the list of 8 side cutter manufacturers and their company rankings.

A side cutter is a type of cutting tool. Side cutters have cutting edges on both sides and on the outer circumference, and are also called side milling cutters.
Side cutters not only have normal cutting edges but also rough cutting edges and staggered cutting edges.
A cutting tool that is very similar to a side cutter and is very difficult to distinguish and use is called a metal saw.
Metal saws have cutting edges only on the outer surface, and there are regular and rough edges.
As mentioned above, side cutter have cutting edges on the outer circumference and both sides, while metal saws have cutting edges only on the outer circumference.
Side cutters are used as cutting tools for groove cutting, step cutting, side cutting, and width determination.
Then, there is a difference between side cutter and metal saws in terms of the applications for which they are suited.
Side cutter has cutting edges on both sides, so the width, or thickness, of the cutting edge is the largest in the direction of thickness, and the body of the cutter is smaller than that of a metal saw.
In other words, the width of the body is thinner than the width (thickness) of the cutting edge, so that even in cases where the depth of cut is large, the sides of the body do not rub against the sides of the workpiece and the sides of the groove can be finished cleanly.
Therefore, side cutters are particularly suitable for grooving.
On the other hand, metal saws have cutting edges only on the outer circumference and no cutting edges on both sides, so the dimensions of the cutting edges and the body are the same in the width (thickness) direction.
Therefore, if the depth of cut is increased beyond the height of the cutting edge, the sides of the body and the side of the workpiece will rub against each other, and the sides of the machined groove will not have a nice finished surface.
Hence, metal saws are particularly suited for cutting processes.
The side cutter allows for more efficient processing of long, deep, open grooves and provides the highest rigidity and productivity for this type of cutting tool.
These side cutter can also be integrated into gangs, allowing machining to more than one surface roughness simultaneously in the same plane.
To use a side cutter, first select the cutter size, pitch, and position so that at least one cutting edge always bites into the cutting area.
Here, be sure to check the chip thickness in order to obtain the optimum feed per edge.
In cases where milling conditions are severe, power and torque requirements are always checked.
When machining, where one end of the arbor is not fixed, the rigidity and protrusion of the arbor are very important.
Second, the jig and arbor support must be tough enough to withstand the resistance of the milling process.
First, the most recommended machining method is the down-cutting method.
In this method, a sturdy stopper is employed in the direction of the main force so that the workpiece is not pushed downward toward the table by the main force.
In this method, the feed direction is the same as the cutting resistance.
This means that the cutter tends to shift upward, making it very important to remove stiffness and backlash.
Up-cutting is an alternative machining method in cases where trouble occurs due to insufficient rigidity or in cases where new work material is to be machined.
This method can be used to eliminate problems caused by insufficient rigidity of the setup or by chip clogging in deep grooves.
A flywheel is an excellent complementary machining method for cases with insufficient setup rigidity and low machine power and torque.
The flywheel is installed as close to the tool as possible.
A more secure attachment of the workpiece is the best countermeasure for this method.
