Non-nuclear Density Meters are devices that measure the density of soil, asphalt, and other materials without the use of radioactive materials.
The density of asphalt evaluates the degree of compaction of asphalt, which has a significant impact on the durability of roads. Conventionally, density and thickness were tested by extracting asphalt in a cylindrical shape after construction, known as core extraction inspection. However, the core removal process is time-consuming and labor-intensive, requiring not only core removal but also subsequent repairs.
Currently, nondestructive testing that does not require core extraction is being used. Non-nuclear Density Meters are the most common type of measurement devices that do not use radiation. Densimeters that use electromagnetic waves to correlate the density of asphalt pavement with the inductance are available.
Non-nuclear Density Meters are mainly used in construction and civil engineering.
In road construction, after asphalt is laid, it is compacted with a compaction machine (roller). If the asphalt is not compacted to the proper density, the pavement may crack or settle prematurely. Non-nuclear Density Meters can be used to measure the density immediately after paving to immediately determine if the compaction is adequate. Since no radiation is used, no qualifications are required and workers can operate it safely and quickly, leading to improved site efficiency.
In backfilling operations after embankment or excavation, it is necessary to check whether the ground has been compacted according to design. For example, Non-nuclear Density Meters are used at sites where roads, embankments, and housing foundations are being built.
In emergency restoration of damaged areas of roads and levees after natural disasters such as earthquakes, heavy rains, and landslides, it is necessary to promptly check the ground conditions and determine whether compaction and reconstruction of restoration materials are appropriate. Non-nuclear Density Meters do not require radiation control or special procedures, and can be quickly deployed to the site in an emergency. They can be operated even by limited personnel, and density and moisture content measurement results can be immediately obtained to help make decisions on restoration work in the affected area.

Rhosonics, established in 1992 in Enschede, Netherlands, is a manufacturer of ultrasonic instrumentation, including ultrasonic concentration meters, slurry density meters, and pipe wall thickness gauges. The company’s products provide accurate and non-intrusive measurement solutions, ensuring precise process control, improved efficiency, and reduced downtime in various applications. The ultrasonic concentration meters determine the concentration of liquids, while slurry density meters measure the density of abrasive slurries. Pipe wall thickness gauges assess the thickness of pipes in industrial settings. These products find applications in industries such as mining, mineral processing, food and beverage, and wastewater treatment.
