What Is a Cap Nut?
A cap nut is a nut that is processed to seal one side of a hexagonal nut so that the tip of the threaded bolt does not show. It is so called because it looks like a cap. It is also often referred to as a "decorative nut," "stop nut," or "bag nut. The standard for the nut portion is the same as the so-called hexagon nut, and it can also be used in combination with a double nut.
They are used for safety and decorative purposes. Mostly made of iron, copper alloy, and stainless steel. Stainless steel is used where rust prevention is required.
Uses of Cap Nuts
The bolt tip does not protrude from the surface, which makes it visually appealing and provides excellent safety. They are also effective in preventing tampering, and because of these features, they are often used in playground equipment in parks. Cap nuts are also frequently used at the ends of anchor bolts on poles and other locations where there is heavy pedestrian traffic and where it is necessary to prevent injury or damage from contact with the bolt.
Principle of Cap Nuts
Cap nuts are generally hexagonal bag nuts. There are three types of cap nuts. The first type has the nut and cap as a single piece with no thread relief groove. The second type has the nut and cap as a single piece with a thread relief groove, and the third type has a cap welded onto the nut. The bolt is not exposed on the surface, which is superior in terms of safety and appearance.
Since the standard for the hexagonal nut portion is the same, it can also be used as a double nut in combination with a regular hexagonal nut. Various sizes are manufactured for metric screws, such as M3, M4, M5, etc., according to the nominal diameter of the screw.
Like bolts, cap nuts are generally made of iron, stainless steel, or plated iron.
Since cap nuts are limited in length to accommodate bolts, it is necessary to consider the length of the bolt to be combined when using cap nuts.
Characteristics of Cap Nuts
Cap nuts, also called capped nuts, are also further commonly referred to as hexagonal bag nuts.
A typical hex nut has a threaded hole through which an inserted bolt protrudes. Cap nuts, however, have a closed threaded hole on one side. Since one side is closed, the end of the bolt is not exposed, and this is used to improve appearance and safety. In addition, since the screw hole does not penetrate, the end of the bolt or the joint between the cap nuts and the bolt is not exposed to rainwater when used outdoors, so it is sometimes used for rust prevention.
The most commonly used method of closing the screw hole is to attach a metal part of the sphere over the hexagonal nut by welding.
One point to note when using cap nuts are the need to consider the length of the bolt, since one side of the nut portion is blocked.
Rust-Proofing Effect of Cap Nuts
The cap nuts has a structure that prevents water from penetrating into the inside of the cap nuts (the threaded part) because the threaded hole is not penetrated. Therefore, the threaded part of the joint can be expected to prevent rust. As a result, it is possible to easily the cap nuts even if it has been left in place for a long time when installed in a location that is often exposed to wind and rain.
Although the surface of the cap nuts can be protected from rust by painting or other means, it is difficult to prevent rusting of the threads (joints).
As an actual example, when a propeller fan is installed on the shaft of a fan motor, which is often exposed to wind and rain when installed outdoors, cap nuts are sometimes used as a fixing nut instead of a regular hex nut.
