What Is a Washer Head Screw?

The name differs depending on the shape of the washer used: P1 (or P=1) is a combination of a JIS flat washer and a screw, P2 (or P=2) is a combination of a spring washer and a screw, P3 (or P=3) is a combination of a spring washer, a JIS flat washer, and a screw. P4 (or P=4) combines a spring washer, a small JIS flat washer, and a screw.
P stands for JIS standard, while I is used instead of P in the case of ISO standard flat washers.
Uses of Washer Head Screws
However, this type of washer is used to improve productivity. For example, when the washer must be threaded into the screw before screwing, which makes assembly work difficult, or when the washer cannot be grasped in a tight space and must be dropped, or when screwing must be done at an angle or sideways. This type of screwdriver is used when you want to improve productivity.
It is also used to avoid problems such as small washers being dropped during maintenance, getting into tight spaces, or being lost.
Principle of Washer Head Screws
In washer head screws, the screw head is made first, then the washer is threaded into the screw head, and a press raises the washer to form the screw shape so that it will not come off. Therefore, the washer will not come off from the screw unless it is forcibly removed.
Since the manufacturing method involves press working while the washer is threaded, it is difficult to fabricate the threaded part to the edge of the screw head, so there will be an area where the screw is not threaded about 1 to 2 mm from the bottom of the washer. This area where the screw is not machined is called an incomplete thread. This area cannot be tapped because it is larger than the diameter of the screw valley. Therefore, when fixing a plate thinner than 1 mm, it is necessary to ensure that it does not hit the imperfectly threaded area. If it does, there are countermeasures, such as adding a washer to release the incomplete thread.
If it is unavoidable, it is necessary to take measures such as adding a washer.
