An AC-to-DC converter is a device that converts alternating current (AC) power to direct current (DC) power and is often used in standard equipment in the home.
Rectification using semiconductor elements is performed to convert AC power to DC power. Rectification methods can be divided into half-wave rectification, which produces half the DC component of the element AC voltage, and full-wave rectification, which produces all the AC voltage components.
In contrast to converters, devices that convert DC power into AC power are called inverters.
AC to DC converters is widely used in everyday life. Most devices that charge and use DC power, such as computers and smartphones, require DC power.
AC100V power is supplied to the home when charging at home, so it is impossible to charge these devices as is. Therefore, the AC100V power supply is converted to a DC voltage such as DC24V in the adapter of the charger, and the DC voltage is supplied to the devices. This adapter is an AC-to-DC converter.
AC-to-DC converters are a device that converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). Since AC has a sinusoidal component, positive/negative values change over time. Half-wave rectification uses diodes and other semiconductor elements to convert AC to DC by extracting only the positive component. In contrast, full-wave rectification inverts the negative and positive components and extracts the positive components, thereby converting all of the AC to DC.
Since AC is a sine wave, wave components (pulsation) remain when converted to DC. Therefore, to suppress the pulsation, a capacitor is connected in parallel with the semiconductor to stop the pulsation component, resulting in a cleaner DC component. This capacitor is called a smoothing capacitor.
The semiconductor consists of a p-type semiconductor and an n-type semiconductor. Since the energy level of the p side is higher than that of the n side, it is easy to conduct current from the p side to the n side, but it is challenging to conduct current from the n side to the p side.
