A nitrogen generator is a type of gas generator. Air is composed of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% argon or carbon dioxide. Only nitrogen is extracted from the air. Nitrogen is also called inert gas and is used to eliminate an oxygen atmosphere.
At factories, nitrogen can be delivered in various ways, such as by cylinder, liquefied nitrogen, or lorry, but for large quantities, nitrogen is generated in-house by nitrogen gas generators. It is said that a cost reduction of 20-70% can be expected compared to conventional nitrogen gas.
Nitrogen is mainly used to create a space with little oxygen. For example, there are many cases in which reagents become inactive due to oxidation when oxygen is present in a chemical reaction, and the reaction does not go well. In such cases, nitrogen is used to remove the oxygen. This is called a nitrogen purge.
Nitrogen can be produced by PSA, membrane, or deep-cooling methods, and PSA is commonly used because it is quick and inexpensive. If higher purity nitrogen is required, the deep-cooling type is used.
The Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) type is also called an adsorption type. Nitrogen is selectively adsorbed under pressure using adsorbent. Nitrogen is obtained by desorbing the adsorbed nitrogen by exposing the adsorbent to reduced pressure. Since the adsorption rate is high in the initial stage of adsorption, nitrogen and oxygen are separated in a short time (1 to 2 minutes) in the initial stage. The same method can be used for oxygen. This repeated process of pressurization and depressurization is called PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption).
The membrane type uses the filtration action of hollow fiber membranes. Air is pressurized and poured into the membrane module to obtain high purity nitrogen due to the membrane-passing properties of nitrogen. It is used when relatively low purity nitrogen is required.
The deep-cooling type is produced by cooling air. The boiling point of nitrogen is -195.8°C, that of oxygen -183°C, and that of argon -185.7°C. The difference in these boiling points results in highly pure nitrogen. In other words, this is a distillation operation, albeit at a very low temperature. This process is used when high purity and large volumes of nitrogen are required.
