An IGBT gate driver is a driver that is connected to the gate terminal of an IGBT transistor, one of the three terminals of the transistor, which is resistant to high currents and capable of high-speed switching. An IGBT gate driver is generally equipped with amplification of signals sent to the IGBTs from the outside, protection circuits for short circuits, and shutdown mechanisms. This requires an IGBT gate driver to charge and discharge the IGBTs. The IGBT gate driver is an important device for performing these charging and discharging operations at high speeds and fully exploiting the performance of the IGBTs.
IGBT gate drivers are used in environments where IGBTs are used. They are used in products with high current loads, such as automobiles, trains, induction heaters, home appliances, and motors for industrial robots. When selecting a driver, it is necessary to consider the amount of current and voltage to be used, response speed to control signals, protection circuitry from short circuits, insulation capacity, size, and durability against heat and vibration.
The IGBT gate driver consists of a signal receiver, amplifying amplifier, forward bias current connection terminal, reverse bias current connection terminal, transistor, short circuit detector, circuit breaker, and terminals that connect to the IGBT gate terminals. The IGBTs are protected by insulators.
During operation, the signal receiver receives signals such as IGBT switching from an external device. The signal is amplified by an amplifying amplifier. If the amplified signal is a forward bias signal, it is amplified by the current flowing from the forward bias current connection terminal and the transistor, and current flows to the gate terminal of the IGBT. If the signal is a reverse bias current, the amplified current flows to the reverse bias current connection terminal and current flows from the IGBTs.
If a short circuit occurs in the IGBT or IGBT gate drivers due to overcurrent, the short circuit detector detects it and sends a signal to the circuit breaker. Upon receiving the signal, the circuit breaker blocks the circuit leading to the current flowing to the IGBT gate terminals, thereby preventing the flow of current.
