What Is an Automatic Soldering Machine?
Soldering is a process in which an alloy called solder is melted between metals to combine them. It is similar to brazing.
Soldering is used in electronic components, but until now, manual soldering has been the norm. In the past, soldering with an iron, in which the solder is melted by heating the tip of a small hand and attaching it to the solder, was the mainstream method.
However, in mass production, flow soldering and reflow soldering are now the most common methods of soldering.
Laser soldering is also becoming mainstream. Laser soldering is attracting attention not only for its automation but also for its ability to shorten processing time by reducing the time required to melt the solder.

Uses of Automatic Soldering Machines
Automatic soldering machines are mainly used in the manufacture of electrical components.
There are two main types of automated soldering equipment: the first is flow soldering, and the second is reflow soldering.
- Flow Soldering
Flow soldering is suitable for mass production of substrates using a conveyor belt. However, one disadvantage is the possibility of defective products because it is difficult to perform detailed processes, such as solder sticking to unnecessary places. - Reflow Soldering
Reflow soldering is capable of soldering with a fairly high degree of precision, so solder-to-solder joints are less likely to occur. Therefore, it is used for components that require high precision.
Principle of Automatic Soldering Machines
This section describes the principle of flow soldering machines and reflow soldering machines, which are the main types of automatic soldering machines.
- Flow Soldering
Flow soldering equipment is used to melt and store solder in advance. The components that require solder are then poured into the tank in which the solder is stored.
After that, the component is removed, and the unwanted solder is removed to complete the process.
Since this method only involves soaking and flowing (flow) the parts, the processing time is very short, making it suitable for mass production. However, since the parts are dipped in solder, this method has the disadvantage that the amount of solder is difficult to adjust, and there is a high possibility of solder bridging, which occurs when solder sticks to each other. - Reflow Soldering
In reflow soldering, a "solder cream" is first applied to the area where solder is needed on the substrate. "Solder cream" looks like melted solder, but it is a mixture of solder and flux.
Solder cream is then melted in a high-temperature furnace, and the equipment is used to solder the parts.
Since the solder cream is applied in advance to a specific area of the component, it is possible to solder only the targeted area. Therefore, unlike the flow method, the amount of solder can be easily adjusted and solder bridging is less likely to occur.
However, it is slower than the flow method, and it is also not good at rating what are called dipped parts.
