GNSS, short for Global Navigation Satelite System, is a global positioning satellite system.
Each country has its own satellite system, such as GPS in the United States, Galileo in Europe, GLONASS in Russia, QZSS (MICHIBIKI) in Japan and BeiDou in China.
GNSS receivers are devices that receive signals from these satellite systems, convert them into latitude and longitude, and acquire highly accurate positions.
The main applications of GNSS receivers are as follows:
In the agricultural field, where there is a shortage of workers due to the aging of the population, GNSS receivers are used to detect the position of farm machinery for automation.
In the automotive field, GNSS receivers are used to identify the position of a vehicle and which lane it is driving in for automated driving. In addition, services are being developed to automatically determine traffic violations and to optimize routes for buses, cabs, and delivery vehicles.
The principle of GNSS receivers includes single positioning and relative positioning.
In single positioning, GNSS receivers receives signals from four or more satellites and obtains position information.
The signal transmitted from a satellite contains information on the time of transmission, and the distance to the satellite is calculated by finding the difference between the time of transmission and the time it takes for the signal to arrive at the GNSS receivers and multiplying it by the signal speed.
Similarly, the distance from three or more other satellites is calculated to detect the position of the GNSS receivers.
Theoretically, three satellites are enough to triangulate the GNSS receiver's position, but four or more satellites are needed to compensate for errors.
Next, relative positioning can be done by DGPS (Differential-GPS) and interferometric methods.
The DGPS method uses multiple GNSS receivers to receive signals from four or more satellites to obtain highly accurate position information.
Multiple GNSS receivers perform positioning independently, and the position is obtained from the position information of each receiver, taking into account common errors.
The interferometer method, like the DGPS method, uses multiple GNSS receivers and obtains a position by utilizing the phase difference between the signals received by each receiver.
