Figure 1. Basic information on lithium aluminum hydride
Lithium Aluminum Hydride is an inorganic compound with the composition LiAlH4.
It is also known as Lithium Aluminum Hydride and is commonly abbreviated as LAH (lithium aluminium hydride).
Lithium Aluminum Hydride is a potent reducing agent and is classified by the GHS as a water-reactive flammable chemical, skin corrosive/irritant, acute toxic (oral), toxic to reproduction, and eye irritant. Lithium Aluminum Hydride is classified as a hazardous and toxic substance under the Industrial Safety and Health Law, which requires labeling and notification of names, etc., and as Class III under the Fire Service Law.
Lithium Aluminum Hydride is used as a reducing agent in chemical synthesis. It is frequently used in the laboratory due to its high reactivity. However, on an industrial scale, reductants with milder reactivity are used and are often avoided for safety reasons.
It is mainly used to reduce esters and carboxylic acids to primary alcohols, using dehydrated ether as the reaction solvent.
Lithium Aluminum Hydride has a molar mass of 37.954 g/mol and a density of 0.917 g/cm3.
It is a stronger reducing agent than sodium borohydride (NaBH4) because the B-H bond is stronger than the Al-H bond. Lithium Aluminum Hydride reacts violently with water to produce hydrogen. A dehydrating solvent is required for use.
Lithium Aluminum Hydride is a hydride complex of aluminum. It is an ionic crystal composed of aluminum hydride ions (AlH-) and lithium ions (Li+), and its crystal structure belongs to the monoclinic system. AlH4- has a tetrahedral structure, and the Al-H bond distance in the crystal is approximately 1.55 Å.
The reaction of aluminum chloride (AlCl3) with lithium hydride (LiH) yields lithium aluminum hydride. The yield by weight is 97%. The reaction mixture can be dissolved in ether and the remaining solid lithium chloride (LiCl) removed by filtration.
Figure 2. Decomposition reaction of lithium aluminum hydride
Lithium Aluminum Hydride is a strong base. Therefore, it reacts violently with protic solvents such as alcohol and decomposes.
At room temperature, Lithium Aluminum Hydride is metastable. After prolonged storage, it gradually decomposes to Li3AlH6 and LiH. The decomposition is accelerated in the presence of titanium, iron, and vanadium.
Lithium Aluminum Hydride decomposes with sodium hydride in tetrahydrofuran (THF) to give sodium aluminum hydride (NaAlH4). Similarly, potassium aluminum hydride (KAlH4) can be produced in 90% yield.
The reverse reaction of NaAlH4 and KAlH4 with lithium chloride to lithium Aluminum Hydride also proceeds using diethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran as the solvent.
Otherwise, lithium aluminum hydride reacts with magnesium bromide (MgBr2) to magnesium aluminum hydride, Mg(AlH4)2.
Figure 3. Reaction mechanism of lithium aluminum hydride
In organic chemistry, lithium aluminum hydride is very reactive and can be used as a powerful reducing agent. In particular, the reduction of esters and carboxylic acids to primary alcohols is widely used.
In this reduction reaction, the hydride ion, H-, attacks the active center of organic compounds with low electron density due to the induced and mesomeric effects along with the decomposition of AlH4-.
