What Is a Lashing Belt?
A Lashing Belt refers to a belt device with a buckle for tightening and securing luggage.
There are two types: the cam buckle type, which fastens according to the torque applied, and the ratchet type, which has a ratchet mechanism and tightens the belt according to repetition. The demand for this type is increasing not only in the industrial sector but also among individual consumers.
The belts used are often made of nylon or polyester materials, which naturally must have excellent tensile strength.
Uses of Lashing Belts
Typical applications of Lashing Belts are to prevent cargo from moving and being damaged by vibration during driving and sudden braking as well as to securely stabilize large cargo on the bed of a light car or truck.
Lashing Belts are often compared to belt slings, which are not used to fasten cargo, but are often used to transport cargo, especially when lifting or lowering it, and are a lifeline for valuable cargo.
Principle of Lashing Belt
Regarding the types of belts that make up the equipment, most are nylon or polyester-based, with polyester outperforming nylon in terms of stiffness and low water absorption. Nylon is characterized by its flexibility and elongation, and its tensile strength at break exceeds that of polyester.
The ratchet type, a typical example of a tightening part, is a mechanism that transmits rotation in one direction only and not the other. When rotating, the claws engage the gears to transmit the motion, and when the gears rotate in reverse, the claws do not engage the gears and rotate freely, so belt lashing is characterized by applying force only in the tightening direction. A ratchet mechanism is also used for the rear wheel of a bicycle.
If the ratchet mechanism tightens too much on a load and may cause damage, a cam buckle mechanism is used. It is a mechanism often used in clothing belts, and the principle is to transmit the appropriate torque to the buckle and fix the belt with the force of the cam. The tightening strength is low, but the buckle device can be made lighter.
Other types of buckles include the over-center buckle method, which is between a ratchet and a cam, and the over-center buckle method, which is used to secure a basket cart inside a box truck often used by courier companies by folding back the metal fittings.
