KVM Extenders are devices that allow you to use a Keyboard (Keyboard), Display (Video Monitor: Video), and Mouse (Mouse) at a distance from your computer.
Typically, the cable connecting the keyboard, display, and mouse (KVM station) to the computer is designed to be no longer than about 10 meters.
Using a cable longer than about 10 meters is said to degrade the quality of the digital signal.
With KVM Extenders, connections can be made over distances up to about 150 meters for CATx and even farther for fiber optics or over IP, while maintaining the quality of the digital signal.
KVM Extenders are primarily used to isolate the computer itself from human view for security and maintenance reasons.
Computers are inherently heat- and noise-generating and space-consuming.
In addition, accidentally turning off a computer can, under certain circumstances, cause serious damage.
Specific examples include gathering noisy and heat-generating computers in a server room, installing only the industrial computer itself in a hazardous location, or placing computers away from a live event venue with a huge screen.
Normally, the keyboard, display, and mouse are connected directly to the computer by cables.
Typically, the keyboard and mouse are connected to the computer with a USB cable, and the display and computer are connected with a VGA or HDMI standard cable.
When using KVM Extenders, the connection method is as follows
KVM Extenders have a transmitter (local) and a receiver (remote).
First, connect the computer to the transmitter with a dedicated cable. Next, the transmitter and receiver are connected. Finally, the receiver is connected to the keyboard and mouse with a USB cable and to the display with HDMI or similar.
Transmitter and receiver connection cables can be analog or digital. The digital type transmits video and operation signals as IP packets. The general cable type is used for small to medium-sized and short distances, the LAN cable type for large and medium distances, and the digital type for long distances.
