Table of Contents
A rigid PCB is a type of Printed Circuit Board.
A printed circuit board is an insulator board with only wiring on its surface or inside, and is the basic component on which electronic components are mounted to create an electronic circuit.
Printed circuit boards can be rigid PCB made of inflexible rigid materials or flexible PCBs made of thin and flexible materials, but rigid PCB is most commonly used.
There are several types of rigid PCB, including single-sided PCBs with a substrate on only one side, double-sided PCBs with a substrate on both sides, multi-layer through-hole PCBs with several layers of substrates stacked on top of each other, and build-up PCBs that enable high-density wiring.
Rigid PCBs are made of rigid materials and have high strength.
They also have excellent electrical characteristics and can be used in a wide range of applications, such as medical equipment, automobiles, aircraft, ships, industrial equipment, PCs, consumer electronic equipment, OA equipment, IT equipment, IC cards, digital cameras, motherboards, etc., due to their advantages such as the ability to integrate a large number of components in a small mounting area by using double-sided boards or multi-layer boards.
Rigid PCBs are PCBs consisting of a substrate (glass cloth or paper) impregnated with resin (epoxy, phenol, Teflon, BT) and prepreg (semi-hardened) and laminated with copper foil using a high-temperature, high-pressure press.
Printed circuit boards are made from copper-clad laminates with circuit patterns formed with copper foil and solder resist ink for protecting the surface of the board.
Printed circuit board types include paper phenolic, paper epoxy, glass composite, glass epoxy, silicon, and BT substrates, depending on the base material and resin that make up the copper-clad laminate. Rigid PCBs also include metal-based and ceramic substrates composed solely of aluminum and ceramics without resin.
Flame retardant and heat resistance of printed circuit boards are generally classified according to the FR (Flame Retardant) grade standard defined by NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association, USA).
1. Paper Phenolic Substrates
Paper phenolic substrates are the oldest substrates in use and are made by impregnating paper with a thermosetting phenolic resin called Bakelite. It is inexpensive, but has low soldering heat resistance and flame retardance. Its drawback is that it absorbs water easily, making plating difficult. It is classified into FR-1, which has low insulation properties, and FR-2, which has high insulation properties. In case of through-hole processing, silver paste can be poured into the through-hole to make the front and back sides conductive.
2. Paper Epoxy Substrates
Paper epoxy substrates are made by impregnating paper with thermosetting epoxy resin and are classified as FR-3. Compared to paper phenol substrates, paper epoxy substrates absorb less water and have superior soldering heat resistance and electrical characteristics.
3. Glass Epoxy Substrates
Glass epoxy substrates, the most widely used type of printed circuit board, are made by impregnating epoxy resin into glass cloth made of woven glass fibers to improve flame resistance. It has high chemical resistance, and through-hole processing makes it possible to form circuits on both the front and back sides.
4. Glass Composite Substrates
Glass composite substrates are made of epoxy impregnated glass cloth combined with glass non-woven fabrics made of pressed glass fibers, and are often used as inexpensive alternatives to glass epoxy substrates.
5. Metal Base Substrates
Metal base substrates are made by coating a base metal with high thermal conductivity such as copper or aluminum with epoxy resin and then laminating it with copper foil by pressing for the purpose of heat dissipation of the substrate. The thicker the base metal, the higher the heat dissipation, but the more expensive it is.
6. Ceramic Substrates
Ceramic substrates, like metal-based substrates, are designed to dissipate heat. Silica or silicon nitride is used as the base material. Compared to metal-based substrates, ceramic substrates have a superior thermal expansion coefficient.
